MEETING OF THE TRI-STATE WOODCARVERS’ CLUB

JULY 10, 2007 AT THE 4H CENTER

Call to order: The meeting was called to order at 7:35 p.m. by Chris Lafferty, President

Secretary’s Report: All the members present received the report and it was accepted

as sent.

Treasurer’s Report: Don Deutsch gave the treasurer’s report which was accepted

as presented.

Library Report: Doug Lafferty reported that the club has plenty of wood for sale.

The sharpener was brought here to see where it could be placed.

This topic will again be discussed under Old Business.

Show Committee Report: Steve Oliver gave the show committee report from its

July 7 meeting. Fliers are now available and were left out for the

members to take. Also available are entry forms, contest rules for

entering the competition, etc.

Tickets will be available for members to take and sell at the August

meeting. A book of tickets is $20 which entitles the member to a

table at the show. A floor plan of the Amory is available for members

to sign up for the table(s) they want.

At the present time we are in need of a 4 foot Christmas tree to put

the carved ornaments on. The tree and the ornaments will be in

"Carving for Charity". If anyone has ornaments for the tree please

give them to Linda (Bruce) Allen. Also, if any members have lawn signs

please let Dick Bitter know so that he can have a good count of

how many more signs and stickers we need . Ken Alvey, a new

member to the club who has a sign business said that he would donate

the stickers for the lawn signs and the large signs. The club voiced

appreciation. The next meeting of the Show Committee is set for

Saturday, August 11 10:00 a.m. at Seton Residence.

Old Business: This evening Steve Oliver brought a small sharpener to the meeting

which was made by Dick Bitter. It is small enough to place in our

cabinet and Steve is willing to donate it to the Club. He would like to

be reimbursed for the new wheel that he purchased for it. Dick Bitter

suggested that this smaller sharpener is safer to use by the members

who may know little about sharpening and may get hurt by the larger

sharpener. The motion to buy the small sharpener was made by Dick

Bitter and seconded by Bruce Allen. It was unanimous that

the small sharpener be kept at the 4 H Center and the larger one be

kept at Seton for Seminars.

New Business: Chris announced that the Monday, July 23 get together at Seton for

Carving has been cancelled.

We have a weekend open at Seton for a Seminar September,1 and 2.

Steve Oliver will offer a seminar on faces or relief carving on September 1

( with a possibility of September 2 if participants want this) The cost

is $50 plus the cost of the rough out. Steve would like to have at least

five participants to have the seminar.

Kerry Austin said that he is in contact with Wesselman Park to have a few

carvers come and sit in the park and carve. Because of the hot weather this

is an activity for September or October and would be good advertisement

for the club and the Show. Contact Kerry if interested.

The question about our Web Site was raised. Steve Oliver said that it

should be ready to go. Neil Ward will make the contact and the members

should be able to reach it. The minutes and newsletter could then be gotten

off of the Web.

Chris Lafferty said that she and Doug are working on a T-shirt for them-

selves and wondered if the members who are new to the club and didn’t

get the old ones would be interested. There will be a sign up sheet for this.

Notes from Chris

Please consider signing up for future seminars and making your down payment.

Steve Oliver’s class Sept 1 and possible Sept 2 We need 5 to sign up in order for the class to be held.

We also have a class scheduled with Steve Brown, Jon Nelson, and Marvin. I will contact each of them to find out a number of participants to make the class hold.

Marvin Daniels will hold a seminar on Sept. 15 & 16 at Seton Residence

beginning at 9 a.m. Cost is $50 plus the rough out.

Steve Brown will hold a seminar on Oct.27&28. Cost is $75 plus the rough out. This also

will be held at Seton.

Jon Nelson will hold a seminar following the show in Nov. these classes will be held in

the evenings at Seton Hall. Cost ? for class plus roughout. I have talked with

Donna and Jon and they are requesting that anyone who is planning on taking his

seminar to please pick out their roughouts ahead of time. Chris will be taking orders at the meetings and will send them a list the first of Oct. Due to his busy schedule and many engagements prior to our show they would like to make sure that you receive and are able to carve the piece you want. (no guarantees if not ordered ahead of time). They will order the roughouts and have them shipped to us prior to his arrival or they plan to pack one box for Evansville and put aside in his truck. Any questions please let me know.

PLEASE don’t forget that for the next meeting August each member is to bring a Christmas ornament to carve (or an item that you are currently working on that you might need help with) to the scheduled carving time prior to the meeting. We do not have any featured teachers for these months. It was great to see everyone working on items at the last meeting along with visiting with each other. J

Comments from president: As we discussed at the meeting we are asking members who have internet service to please log onto our website to see how well you can access it. The address is www.tristatewoodcarvers.com I went to the site and was able to access it ok (sometimes I know with dial-up service which I have it can take awhile if there are pictures etc. added).

PLEASE don’t forget that for the next 2 meetings July and August each member is to bring a Christmas ornament to carve (or an item that you are currently working on that you might need help with) to the scheduled carving time prior to the meeting. We do not have any featured teachers for these months. It was great to see everyone working on items at the last meeting along with visiting with each other. J

We hope to have the T-shirts that everyone ordered at our next meeting. I have also ordered additionally ones for those that may not have been at the last meeting.

See you all at the next meeting, Chris
