March 13, 2007 minutes for the Tri State Woodcarvers Club

Greetings and an apology as to the time span in getting the newsletter out this month.

The newsletter has a different format this time and I will try it again next month. The minutes are not included as written by the acting secretary for the meeting. Items of interest and importance will be highlighted and mentioned.

All dues should be paid so a 2007 roster can be prepared. I am in the process of completing the 2007 roster. There will be an addendum that will include those paying after March (possibly April). That will be sent electronically to those with email addresses and there will be print copies at the meeting in May for all others.

It was mentioned that one of the Carvings for Charity prizes that was in the Library cabinet is missing. It was won by one of our club members and was waiting to be picked up by him upon his next attendance of a meeting. If anyone has seen the small group of characters that was carved by Nicole, please contact Doug. He also said that wood is available for purchase in the library cabinet. Prices are marked on each piece and money should be given to Doug or Don as the club has already paid for the wood. We purchased $300 worth of wood so please help the club out and buy your wood from the club.

Jon Nelson will be this year’s judge and will be staying with Steve Oliver. He will be available for informal get togethers before the show and a seminar after the show. Please let Steve Oliver know if you have any recommendations regarding the show or contest along with any suggestions or if you would like to serve on the show committee.

Club Seminars (at meetings) are as follows:

April 10th – Steve Brown

May 8th – Marvin Daniels

Upcoming weekend seminars:

April 28th – 9AM to 5PM – Phil Kruzich – ornament cost $25 plus rough out. We need 10 to attend. Tools that you will use (but not required to have) Knife, V tool with about a ¼ wing, gouges 5, 7, & 9. PLEASE sign-up at the next meeting or CALL Chris at 812-882-2903.

It is important that if you sign up for a seminar you attend or find someone to take your spot. When we agree to host these seminars it cost the club money if not everyone shows up. We pay for the minimum spaces that the instructor states they need to conduct the class.

Steve Brown sent information on possible seminars for the future. The names of possible teachers are Rick Jenson (bark carving, $150 per student plus rough out, needs 10 students), Gerald Sears (caricatures, available August 31, September 1 & 2, cost $135 plus rough out, needs 12 students), and Debbie Edwards (realistic animals, $125 plus rough out, needs 10 students, not available until 2008). Discussion followed. Interest was shown for Rick Jenson with the possibility of him judging our 2008 show and doing a seminar then. Also, there was interest in Debbie Edwards for possibly March or April of 2008. That information will be relayed to Steve Brown.

The club will no longer be subscribing to Chip Chats or start subscriptions to other magazines. If you currently subscribe to any carving magazine and would like to share with others when you are finished please bring them to the meetings.

Start thinking and planning on getting together to carve ornaments for the show. Steve Oliver suggested that we plan a date to meet at Sister’s and carve ornaments for the show. The club will be informed when a date and time is finalized.

Bob Koressel will be checking into places that we can display our carvings to help share information about our club. If anyone knows of places of businesses etc. that are willing to allow us to do so get with Bob.

Steve Oliver mentioned that we will have a new website server that will cost less for the club and be easier to maintain. Members should not notice any difference.

Our next meeting will be Tuesday, April 10th

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for our monthly meetings which are held the second Tuesday of every month at the Vanderburgh County 4H Center. Carving seminar at 6PM with meeting at 7:30PM. There is a time to carve from 6-7:30. There is usually a featured carver each month that you can join along with others to carve a specific item. The cost varies with each project. On average it cost $5 to $10. The club also pays the instructor for teaching the class. If you are interested in doing a class please let Chris know.

If you do not wish to participate in the seminar carving bring along your own project and sit around and share with others. Share with others even if you do not feel like carving that evening. Everyone (well almost everyone) likes to sit and share.

Continue to remember all of our members and their families in prayers. There are several members that we have not seen or heard from in awhile. Help keep the club informed if you know of anyone who needs assistance with transportation to the meetings or any thing else that we might be able to do as a club.

I look forward to seeing everyone Tuesday. Since this newsletter is close on getting out it should be a good reminder to attend the meeting and carving time.

Chris
