MEETING OF THE TRI-STATE WOODCARVERS’ CLUB

March 11, 2008 at 4H Center

Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Chris Lafferty, President at 7:30 p.m.

Chris introduced our visitors and prospective members: Jim Crow of Evansville, Jeff Hancock of Newburgh, Dennis Hall of Chrisney and Joe Slaton of Evansville.

Secretary’s Report: The members received a newsletter and combined minutes. We had only a few members at the January Meeting because of the weather and the February meeting was cancelled because of the weather.

Treasurer’s Report: Don Deutsch gave the treasurer’s report. He reminded the members that the 2008 Dues are to be paid as soon as convenient so that he will be able to finish the membership roster in May.

Show Committee: Linda Allen gave a brief Show committee report. Debbe Edwards will be the judge this year and she will offer a seminar at Seton Residence on the Monday and Tuesday after the Show. The next meeting of the Show Committee will be on Saturday April 26 at 9:30 a.m. but it will be held at Ken Avey’s place because of a big meeting being held at Seton on this date. Ken has offered to let the club members use his building on Saturdays. We decided that the last Saturday of the month would be a good time. Directions to this building will be forthcoming.

Steve Oliver told the membership that he asked the people at the Amory if the Club could do something for them. They said that they do not have funds in their budget to cover postage to mail items left by folks for those soldiers who are deployed. Steve said that he has cut outs to make flag pins and asked if some of the members could join him in this. The pins would be sold and the money given to the Amory for this purpose. This is how the offer by Ken was made. If anyone is interested they can go to Ken’s building on March 29. The building is located on Green River Road and Highway 57.

Library Report: None at this time.

Dick Bitter is asking the members to please bring back the lawn signs from last year’s show to the next meeting. He needs these to plan for this year.

Seminar: Peg Cawthorn will teach a class at Seton Residence on Saturday, April 12 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Woodburning. The cost is $60 per person. We would like to have ten persons signed up. To date there are 9. Anyone interested should contact Chris Lafferty.

Chris is also asking for volunteers to do seminars on club nights. Ken was asked but said that he was not a knife carver so he couldn’t do one. After the meeting some of the members wanted to ask Ken if he could hold a seminar just on the use of the power tools that he uses. Many members have tools but don’t use them because they need help.

Anyone who is interested in doing a mini seminar is asked to contact Chris Lafferty. Nicole Nadeau seemed to be willing to do one.

Half Pot: The half pot was won by Kathy Vonderahe (first time ever!)

Adjournment: there being no further business the meeting adjourned at 8:10 p.m. The next meeting at the 4H Center will be Tuesday, April 8

Respectfully submitted:

Sister Anthony, Secretary

A few words from the President:

If you plan to attend the carving of flags (or a project that you might be working on) at Ken Alvey’s on Saturday and have difficulty finding the place give Ken a call at 1-812-867-3418. This is a social carving gathering. Not a class. We will help each other and enjoy time spent together.

Or you can call Chris Lafferty cell on Saturday. 812-881-9503.

I will try to get him to put a sign of some sort out front. I understand you really can’t miss it if you are at the corner of Hwy 57 and Green River Road.

For anyone that might be interested there are a group of Vincennes residents that have invited us to come and join them in carving on the 1st Weds of every month. This group consists of several individuals who are interested in learning to carve. Bob Flory who I understand used to belong to our club is one of the carvers that will be there. They are not sure at this time if this will become a club or just a social time.

If you are interested please give Chris a call and I will supply additional details as to where located etc. They plan to meet this 1st Weds in April which is April 2cnd. Probably 6-?

Please don’t forget to renew your club membership ASAP so that we can update our roster.

I am looking for someone who would be interested in getting out the Newsletter in May and possibly June due to the fact that I will be working out of State for a few weeks. I will supply you with all of the information needed.

Anyone interested in giving a mini class before our meetings?????? You do not have to be a national known carver to present. Just a small project.

See you all in April,

Chris
